PTA

To our parents and community,

Black History Month is just around the corner! Our PTA Black History Month Committee has been working to provide some resources for our school and teachers. We would love to have the kids surrounded with Black History Month images and information. Here is a summary of the things we are doing!!!
We have created two mini lesson plans per grade. The lessons are most often based on a children’s book but for some of the older grades we have used articles. We have done our best to make the lessons and activities age appropriate, and of course the teachers can adapt them to their classes needs. You will find all the lesson plans on the PTA webpage on the Horizon site.
We have prepared digital display slides to show on the screen by the office. They include a slide about each of the following; Katherine Johnson, George Washington Carver, The Tuskegee Airmen and Brown vs Board of Education. There are also several slides detailing our events and activities.
We are encouraging our teachers with their classes to decorate their doors/walls by their classroom! We will happily provide materials and help wherever it is needed.
We have created a bulletin board in the gym by the lunch line.
There will be two lunchtime activities created and run by the Student Leadership Team in our school. This group will also be making posters promoting their lunchtime activities, our events and Black History Month in general.
We will be holding a poetry contest this year. It will be similar to the Reflection program where parents help students at home. Watch for the flyer to come home in early February.
There will also be an assembly in mid February with a performance by Ngoma y Africa, an African cultural group based in Provo.
Please dont hesitate to reach out to our committee, we are happy and ready to answer any questions you might have!!
Sincerely,
The PTA Black History Month Committee

BOOK BUNDLES

*** PROGRAM HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED****

Each grade level at Horizon is working on lessons regarding anti-racist education during their Second Steps Curriculum and Restorative Classroom Circles. Anti-racist education for Horizon means celebrating and valuing all cultures and families actively. Additionally, we are building skills to find commonality in our differences and empathy for all experiences.

We invite you to take a moment to explore and share these books and lessons. The link for the Book Bundles is below:
